Efficacy ofBerberis vulgarisAqueous Extract on Viability of Echinococcus Granulosus Protoscolices

Abstract: The scolicidal activity was very effective in low concentration (4 mg/ml) and short exposure time (5 min). Therefore, after being examined in vivo and additional experiments, it may be used as a suitable and effective scolicidal in surgery.

“…Since the past decades, the use of natural compounds derived from plant has been frequently seen in traditional remedies [10]. Various investigations have examined the scolicidal effects of essential oils or extracts of plants in today's climate [12,21,[28][29][30][31].…”

“…Fata et al [15] also found that ethanolic extract of B. vulgaris significantly decreased ulcer size of cutaneous leishmaniasis of BALB/c mice after 2 weeks. Recently, Rouhani et al [30] reported that aqueous extract of B. vulgaris fruits had an effective scolicidal activity at low concentration (4 mg/mL) and short exposure time (5 min). Thus, the present results were in agreement with those of previous studies in demonstrating antiparasitic activities of B. vulgaris and its bioactive compound, berberine.…”

“…However, the majority of these scolicidal agents have been reported to cause many undesirable side-effects to human which limit their clinical applications (Besim et al, 1998;Moazeni and Alipour-Chaharmahali, 2011;Moazeni and Nazer, 2010). Some other laboratory studies have recently reported the scolicidal activity of acidic and alkaline solutions (Moazeni and Larki, 2010), biogenic selenium nanoparticles (Mahmoudvand et al, 2014) and low-voltage direct electric current (Dalimi et al, 2005) and some plant extracts such as garlic (Allium sativum) (Moazeni and Nazer, 2010), Berberis vulgaris (Rouhani et al, 2013), A. sativum (Sadjjadi et al, 2008), Zataria multiflora (Moazeni and Roozitalab, 2012), and Trachyspermum ammi L. . However, the effects of such agents on human cells were not investigated in vitro and in vivo.…”
