Efficacy of IMOD in the treatment of oral lichen planus—Efficacy of IMOD in oral lichen planus

Abstract: Objectives: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, immunologically mediated, mucocutaneous disorder. A wide range of topical and systemic therapies have been used in the treatment of OLP. The efficacy of IMOD (an Iranian new immunomodulator drug, containing selenium, carotene, and flavonoids) in the management of oral lichen planus was evaluated. Study design: In a before-after clinical trial study, thirty patients (21 women and 9 men; age range 35-66 years with 112 lesions) with lichen planus were enrolled. T… Show more

“…Atrophic and erosive forms are usually symptomatic, and they can cause mild burning to severe pain that causes difficulty in swallowing and speaking. 4,[39][40][41][42] The exact etiopathogenesis of OLP is unknown. It seems that several factors, including stress, genetics, environment, and lifestyle are effective in OLP development.…”

“…In fact, the above mechanism is a cell-mediated immunologic response that is developed against antigenic change of oral mucosa. 41,46 World Health Organization (WHO) has considered this disease as a precancerous condition, because many articles have substantiated the malignant potential of OLP and stated that patients with OLP are at increased risk of cancer. 39,41,[47][48][49] The prevalence of OSCC from this disease has been reported as 0.4 to 6.5%.…”

“…In 2011, Agha‐Hosseini et al evaluated the efficacy of IMOD, an Iranian immunomodulator drug consisting of selenium, carotene, and flavonoids, in the treatment of 30 patients suffering from OLP. This Iranian immunomodulator drug was found effective in the treatment of OLP lesions (Agha‐Hosseini, Mirzaii‐Dizgah, Abdollahi, & Akbari‐Gillani, ). Another clinical trial conducted on 30 patients with erosive OLP in 2015 evaluated the effectiveness of selenium ACE (selenium plus vitamins A, C, and E) as an adjunctive therapy to the conventional treatment modality of OLP (topical corticosteroids and antifungal).…”
