Efficacy of Local Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Pressure Ulcer in Spinal Cord Injury Patients

Abstract: Background: Pressure ulcer is one of the common complications occurring in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been found useful in the treatment of pressure ulcers in few studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of PRP in pressure ulcer healing in comparison to hydrogel dressing in SCI patients. Methods: In this randomized interventional study, 52 patients of SCI having pressure ulcers of grade III/IV were randomized into two groups of 26 each. In group A patien… Show more

“…In a pilot study of 15 patients with SCI and chronic PrU who developed fistulas, the authors observed a decrease in fistula secretion levels after 1 week of PRP treatment, no fistulas at 2 weeks, and complete disappearance of fistulas at 3 weeks on MRI (129). Gurpreet et al demonstrated in comparative tests that PRP significantly improved ulcer area, volume, and pressure ulcer healing scale scores compared to hydrogel dressings (Figures 7A-C), and had significant advantages in granulation, epithelial formation, and vascular formation (130). Similar experiments have also demonstrated the feasibility of PRP in the treatment of PrU (128,132,133).…”

“…Subsequent meta‐analyses have affirmed its therapeutic efficacy 38–41 . Recent studies focusing on ulcers with specific etiologies, such as diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers, have further substantiated that PRP facilitates ulcer healing and contributes to a reduction in ulcer size 42–45 . Previous meta‐analyses on PRP treatment of venous ulcers reveals limited and inconsistent data.…”

“…[38][39][40][41] Recent studies focusing on ulcers with specific etiologies, such as diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers, have further substantiated that PRP facilitates ulcer healing and contributes to a reduction in ulcer size. [42][43][44][45] Previous meta-analyses on PRP treatment of venous ulcers reveals limited and inconsistent data. A meta-analysis by De Oliveira et al 46 indicated no significant improvement in complete healing with PRP, though it did show promise in reducing ulcer size, despite the study's small scale and lower evidence quality.…”
