Seroprevalence, clinical findings, and lesions of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) in Beetal goats were recorded during an outbreak. The overall seroprevalence of CCPP was 32.50%. Confirmation of Mycoplasma mycoides in serum was carried out using counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) technique. The highest CIE-positive cases were recorded in the older goats (51.72%) as compared to young ones. Nasal swabs collected from 39 goats showing respiratory signs were found positive for M. mycoides. The most consistent clinical findings were mild to severe cough, purulent nasal secretion, emaciation, dyspnea, increased respiration rate, and pyrexia. Mortality due to CCPP was 9.17%. Consolidation of lungs exhibited the highest frequency (100%), followed by alveolar exudation (90.90%) and pleural adhesion (72.72%). Among the microscopic lesions, septal peribronchiolar fibrosis exhibited the highest frequency (81.81%), followed by fibrinous pleuritis (63.63%) and peribronchiolar cuffing of mononuclear cells (54.54%) in lungs. From these results, it was concluded that CCPP under subtropical conditions has high prevalence in Beetal goats and leads to significant mortality.

The pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of marbofloxacin (MBF) were determined in six healthy female goats of age 1.00–1.25 years after repeated administration of MBF. The MBF was administered intramuscularly (IM) at 2 mg kg−1 day−1 for 5 days. Plasma concentrations of MBF were determined by high‐performance liquid chromatography, and PK parameters were obtained using noncompartmental analysis. The MBF concentrations peaked at 1 hr, and peak concentration (Cmax) was 1.760 µg/ml on day 1 and 1.817 µg/ml on day 5. Repeated dosing of MBF caused no significant change in PK parameters except area under curve (AUC) between day 1 (AUC0–∞D1 = 7.67 ± 0.719 µg × hr/ml) and day 5 (AUC0‐∞D5 = 8.70 ± 0.857 µg × hr/ml). A slight difference in mean residence time between 1st and 5th day of administration and accumulation index (AI = 1.13 ± 0.017) suggested lack of drug accumulation following repeated IM administration up to 5 days. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) demonstrated that Escherichia coli (MIC = 0.04 µg/ml) and Pasturella multocida (MIC = 0.05 µg/ml) were highly sensitive to MBF. Time‐kill kinetics demonstrated rapid and concentration‐dependent activity of MBF against these pathogens. PK/PD integration of data for E. coli and P. multocida, using efficacy indices: Cmax/MIC and AUC0–24hr/MIC, suggested that IM administration of MBF at a dose of 2 mg kg−1 day−1 is appropriate to treat infections caused by E. coli. However, a dose of 5 mg kg−1 day−1 is recommended to treat pneumonia caused by P. multocida in goats. The study indicated that MBF can be used repeatedly at dosage of 2 mg/kg in goats without risk of drug accumulation up to 5 days.

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of a single-dose of gamithromycin (GM) or marbofloxacin (MR) in kids with naturally occurring pneumonia. Thirty-six kids, aged 2–2.5 months, with body weight ranging from 12 kg to 18 kg were presented with clinical signs of pneumonia. The most prominent clinical findings were an increase in the respiratory rate, crackling lung sounds on auscultation, coughing, nasal discharge and an increased rectal temperature. Mannheimia haemolytica and Mycoplasma spp. colonies were isolated from microbiological examination of six transtracheal washes and lung tissues of one necropsied kid. The severity of pneumonia was evaluated by using cumulative clinical score (CCS). The CCS of the 36 kids used in the study were four and above. Kids were randomly divided into two equal groups; the GM group received a single subcutaneous dose of GM at a dosage of 6 mg/kg and the MR group received MR intramuscularly at a dosage of 8 mg/kg as a single-dose. No side effects related to the drugs were detected in either group. All 36 kids were clinically examined 3 weeks after the initiation of the treatment. Clinical signs in both groups were almost completely absent at the end of the study. A single administration of GM or MR was successfully used in the treatment of kids with pneumonia.
