Efficacy of Mouth Rinses and Toothpaste on Tooth Whitening

Abstract: The whitening toothpaste Close Up White Now and the experimental mouth rinse with Plasdone showed similar color alteration as conventional toothpaste after a 12-week treatment simulation. These groups presented significantly lower color alteration compared with whitening mouth rinses Listerine and Colgate Plax Whitening, which showed similar results to those observed after 14 days of bleaching with 10% CP treatment.

“…Few studies in the literature have evaluated the relationship between brushing with toothpastes proposed to bleach vital teeth and the efficacy of these products to obtain significant results (6,(8)(9)(10)(13)(14)(15). However, there were some randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effect of different whitening toothpastes (6,8,13,19).…”

“…In vitro studies (7)(8)(9) show that brushing with toothpaste containing bleaching products do not promote significant results in discolored teeth compared to conventional dentifrices, concluding that these dentifrices, due to their mechanical action (abrasion) and the increase of high-performance abrasives as hydrated silica, act just at removing pigmentation, giving a false sense of whitening. Studies also reveal that certain whitening dentifrices containing hydrogen peroxide and carbamide may produce lesions on the enamel surface (10)(11)(12).…”

“…For this reason, many authors argue that after in-office dental bleaching, maintenance with home bleaching should be done using low concentration peroxide gels or even whitening toothpastes [19]. The results presented in this article show a technique that combines using mineral oil (Nujol) after dental bleaching with violet light to obtain the removal or prevent the reconnection of broken pigments present in the enamel and dentin and to promote greater stability in this technique.…”
