Efficacy of needleless transcutaneous electroacupuncture in synchronization with breathing for symptomatic idiopathic gastroparesis: A blinded and controlled acute treatment trial

Abstract: In sham or STEA, the nausea scores of 2.7 ± 0.5 and 1.9 ± 0.5 at fasting baseline, respectively, increased to 5.9 ± 0.4 and 5.8 ± 0.3 during Ensure test (P < .05, vs baseline), subsequently reduced to 3.4 ± 0.6 with sham or 3.6 ± 0.6 with STEA, respectively (P < .05, vs Ensure period). Experiments with sham and STEA started with similar % of normal waves on EGG (66.4 ± 3.9 and 61.8 ± 3.0, respectively); decreased to 63. 5 ± 4.1 and 58.2 ± 2.8 during the Ensure test. After STEA, there was ~24% increase in % of … Show more

“…Inflammatory cells which have been evaluated in IBS include mast cells, eosinophils, and lymphocytes, particularly T cells. Mast cells have been highly implicated in IBS pathogenesis in both IBS-C and IBS-D 9 , 10 . IBS has been associated with an increase in the density of degranulating mast cells, while the density of mast cells in close proximity to enteric nerves correlates with abdominal pain severity 11 .…”

“…Clinical manifestations include loss of appetite, nausea, paroxysmal vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and abdominal distension. A large number of modern clinical trials have proved that acupuncture is effective in the treatment of gastroparesis [17,18]. In recent years, the clinical studies of gastroparesis are mostly compared with the acupuncture group and the modern medicine group.…”

“…While it has been previously proposed that an imbalance between them may contribute to GI dysmotility, current knowledge suggests that their relationship is more complex and involves dynamic interactions, rather than a simple balanced model 45 . It is believed that TES such as tVNS, TEA, and TENS works by modulating the ANS 13,16,46,47 . The vagus nerve and sacral plexus are part of the PNS and play an important role in regulating interactions between the central nervous system and the GI tract, including functions of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and colon.…”
