Efficacy of nine insecticides against shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in eggplant

Abstract: Shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee, is a serious pest of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). Management practices of this obnoxious pest are limited to frequent spray of chemical insecticides. Due to increasing levels of resistance of L. orbonalis to different insecticides there is an urgent need to test new chemicals. In this study, nine insecticides such as azadirachtin 0.03EC, abamectin 1.8EC, flubendiamide 24WG, chlorpyriphos 20EC, cartap 50SP, carbosulfan 20EC, thiodicarb 75WP, cypermethrin 1… Show more

“…In Bangladesh, about eight insect species are considered as major pests causing damage to brinjal (Datta et al, 2011). Among these insect pests, brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee is the most notorious (Latif et al, 2010) and destructive one. In vegetative stage of the crop growth, larva bores into the shoots resulting in drooping, withering and drying of the affected shoots.…”

“…In both laboratory and field trial, the Carbosulfan 20 EC and Flubendiamide 24 WG showed higher efficacy in terms of increment on healthy fruits and reduction of shoot and fruit infestation. This was followed by Cartap and Thiodicarb with moderate efficacy in both the season (Latif et al, 2010).…”

“…Guenee is the key pest of eggplant (Latif et al, 2010;Chakraborti and Sarkar, 2011;Saimandir and Gopal, 2012) inflicting sizeable damage in almost al the eggplant growing areas (Dutta et al, 2011) and is most destructive, especially in south Asia (Thapa, 2010). As a result of its feeding inside fruit, the fruits become unmarketable and yield losses up to 90 percent (Baral, et al, 2006).…”

“…The top five eggplant producing countries are China (28.4 million tons; 57% of the world's total), India (13.4 million tons; 27% of the world's total), Egypt (1.2 million tons), Turkey (0.82 million tons), and Iran (0.75 million tons). The crop is severely damaged by Leucinodes orbonalis , as this pest has an internal mode of feeding, which renders common management practices ineffective (Latif, Rahman, & Alam, 2010).…”
