Efficacy of one-surgeon basketing technique for stone extraction during flexible ureteroscopy for urolithiasis

Abstract: Objective : To evaluate the safety and efficacy of using one-surgeon basketing technique by a solo surgeon for stone extraction during flexible ureteroscopy (f-URS) for urolithiasis. Patients and methods : This retrospective study enrolled patients with urinary calculus who underwent f-URS at two institutions in Japan between September 2014 and March 2020. A total of 100 patients were operated by one experienced surgeon using the one-surgeon basketing technique. With this app… Show more

“…The stone-free rate of tf-URS group was lower than that previously reported [ 4 ], which may be associated with the selection of calculi location and the degree of intraoperative stone crushing. No residual calculi or calculi diameter ≤ 2 mm based on CT examination without clinical symptoms should be defined as stone-free status [ 11 ]. The stone-free rates at 3 months after surgery of tf-URS and FURS groups were lower than that of SMP group, but there was no significant difference.…”

“…Operation time referred to a period from the time when the scope was inserted into the body to the time when the scope was removed from the body. For the definitions on stone-free status, different studies [ 10 , 11 ] has some differences on the size of stone fragments. In this study, stone-free status referred to the scope smoothly reaching target calices and pulverizing calculi into small fragments less than 2 mm [ 11 ].…”

“…The surgeries were mainly performed by three experienced surgeons at our institutions. All patients underwent a standard surgical procedure (Figures 1,2) (12). In group A, a PNS (8 or 10 Fr) was inserted by urologists, under local anesthesia and fluoroscopy, after the patients' admission to the hospital and retained for a median of 4 days (range: 2-6 days) before f-URS (Figure 1B).…”

“…The e cacy of the one-surgeon basketing technique has been demonstrated [8,9]. In this method, the surgeon handles the exible ureteroscope with one hand and simultaneously manipulates the basket forceps with the other hand, as opposed to the conventional two-surgeon basketing technique in which two surgeons separately handle the exible ureteroscope and basket forceps.…”
