IntroductionThe American College of Sports Medicine provided guidelines for exercise prescriptions in cancer survivors for specific cancer‐ and treatment‐related health outcomes. However, there was insufficient evidence to generate exercise prescriptions for 10 health outcomes of cancer treatment. We sought to update the state of evidence.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review of these 10 understudied health outcomes (bone health, sleep, cardiovascular function, chemotherapy‐induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), cognitive function, falls and balance, nausea, pain, sexual function, and treatment tolerance) and provided an update of evidence.ResultsWhile the evidence base for each outcome has increased, there remains insufficient evidence to generate exercise prescriptions. Common limitations observed across outcomes included: variability in type and quality of outcome measurement tools, variability in definitions of the health outcomes, a lack of phase III trials, and a majority of trials investigating breast or prostate cancer survivors only.ConclusionWe identified progress in the field of exercise oncology for several understudied cancer‐ and treatment‐related health outcomes. However, we were not able to generate exercise prescriptions due to continued insufficient evidence base. More work is needed to prescribe exercise as medicine for these understudied health outcomes, and our review highlights several strategies to aid in research acceleration within these areas of exercise oncology.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a prevalent chronic musculoskeletal problem among older people, leading to pain, muscle weakness, and a decline in the quality of life. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques on the muscle strength of patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on all patients with knee osteoarthritis who visited orthopedic offices in Darab City in 2021. A non-probability sampling method was used to select 50 eligible patients, who were then divided into 2 groups: an experimental group and a control group. The allocation of participants into these groups was done by a block randomization method. The experimental group underwent proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques for eight weeks, with two sessions per week lasting 30 - 45 minutes. In contrast, the control group received only routine care. Muscle strength in both groups was evaluated using the manual muscle test scale before, four weeks, and immediately after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21, descriptive statistics (such as central tendency and dispersion indices), independent t, chi-square, Fisher’s exact, Mann-Whitney U, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Wilcoxon, and repeated measures ANOVA tests. A significance level of 0.05 was considered. Results: Fifty patients (24% male and 76% female) with a mean age of 53.6 ± 10 completed this study. There was no statistically significant difference by mean scores of muscle strength parameters, including degree (2.8 ± 0.4 vs. 2.8 ± 0.3), the percentage of normality (45 ± 10 vs. 44 ± 12), and scale (2.8 ± 0.4 vs. 2.8 ± 0.3) between the intervention group and the control group on the before of intervention, respectively. However, a significant difference was observed by degree (3.6 ± 0.6 vs. 2.8 ± 0.3; P = 0.001), the percentage of normality (65 ± 14 vs. 45 ± 9; P = 0.001), and scale (3.5 ± 0.6 vs 2.8 ± 0.3; P = 0.001) between the intervention group and the control group, respectively, at the end of the intervention. Conclusions: The proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques could improve the muscle strength of patients with knee osteoarthritis. If this finding is confirmed in other studies, healthcare workers should use these techniques for the benefit of these patients.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Arabic Quick-Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QDASH-Ar) for breast cancer (BC) survivors. In this cross-sectional study, a convenient sample of 88 BC survivors was recruited and completed both the QDASH-Ar and Short Form-36 (SF-36) Arabic questionnaires. Internal consistency and test–retest reliability were assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and the two-way random intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC(2.1)], respectively. Standard error of measurement (SEM) was used to calculate the minimal detectable change (MDC). Spearman correlation coefficients were used to test construct validity between QDASH-Ar and SF-36. The results demonstrated that QDASH-Ar had a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.86 and an ICC(2.1) of 0.92. The scale’s SEM and MDC were 2.69 and 7.47, respectively. The correlation coefficients between the Quick-DASH score and the subscales of SF-36 ranged from −0.27 to −0.65, supporting the predefined hypotheses for construct validity. The discriminant validity was proven by the Quick-DASH total score between BC survivors with and without lymphedema (20.89 ± 12.78 vs. 33.63 ± 11.58, P < 0.01). In conclusion, QDASH-Ar demonstrated acceptable internal consistency, excellent test–retest reliability, and moderate to strong construct validity. Clinicians and researchers can use this valid instrument to assess and monitor upper extremity activity limitations and symptoms in BC survivors.
