Efficacy of SDHI fungicides, including benzovindiflupyr, against Colletotrichum species

Abstract: This is the first report on the activity of benzovindiflupyr against Colletotrichum species. The broad-spectrum efficacy of benzovindiflupyr within the Colletotrichum genus might be exploited when designing disease management strategies against various pathogens on a wide range of crops. Other mechanism(s) than fungicide target-site modification may be responsible for differential sensitivity of Colletotrichum species to SDHI fungicides. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…This phenomenon was also found in Colletotrichum complex [13][14][15]. Fungicides could also have different intrinsic activity in species complex, i.e less activity of benomyl was found in C. acutatum compared to C. gloeosporioides [16,17]. Another reason of importance to identify species is toxins production in some species.…”

“…The most recent SDH‐inhibiting fungicides possess a high level of efficacy against numerous important cereal crop pathogens. They contain chiral hydrophobic moieties at the ‘amide linker’ such as penflufen, isopyrazam, penthiopyrad sedaxane and benzovindiflupyr (Table ) …”

“…The pyrazole-4-carboxamides Table 2). 50 Amide linkers are usually phenyl and thienyl groups (penthiopyrad) that are substituted in the ortho-position by a larger branched or bicyclic chiral hydrophobic moiety. It seems that the angle defined by the amide linker and the chiral ortho-substituted 'hydrophobic moiety' in the phenyl or thienyl rings is important for the fungicidal spectrum and potency of SDH-inhibiting fungicides.…”

“…The advent of fungicide resistance has been documented in many modes of action groups in VA and surrounding states [19][20][21]. Moreover, risks of fungicide resistance development from the reliance on curative fungicide application have been discussed [11].…”
