Efficacy of Spinosad Tablets Administered to a Colony of 15 Indoor Cats Naturally Infested with Fleas

Abstract: The aims of the study were (i) to describe adult fleas distribution in a strictly indoor cat colony composed of cats with flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) and non-FAD cats and (ii) to evaluate the efficacy of spinosad used alone. Skin lesions were scored according to the SCORing Feline Allergic Dermatitis lesion severity scale (SCORFAD) on days 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90. Cats were combed prior to the treatment (days 0, 30, and 60) and on days 15, 45, and 90; collected fleas were replaced on the animals. All cats … Show more

“…No fleas were collected from cats dosed with spinosad from day 15 to 90. Cats were evaluated for scored for FAD and their scores were reduced by 98% by day 90 [ 401 ]. Oral doses of fluralaner provided >99% control in a simulated home environment for 12 weeks [ 366 ].…”

“…Thermal cues apparently had no effect. This has been shown in certain studies to be an effective means of monitoring indoor populations [ 400 , 401 , 402 , 403 , 404 , 405 ]. However, without additional treatments this alone will not resolve the flea infestation.…”

“…Examination of cats in an indoor colony found that those suffering from flea bite allergy harbored an average of 0.75 fleas whereas healthy cats had an average of 5.2 fleas. Some of the flea bite allergy affected cats were found to have no fleas [8]. This result confirmed that absence of fleas or a low level of flea infestation does not rule out flea bite allergic dermatitis.…”

“…Flea absence was not an exclusion criterion for study enrolment and previous studies showed that cats with flea allergy dermatitis can present with either very few or no fleas on clinical examination [8]. This could be because the high level of pruritus in flea bite allergic cats leads to over grooming and removal of more fleas compared to unaffected cats.…”

“…However, as the study showed, antiflea treatment in cats is less common than in dogs, which could support a higher level of infestation in cats. Flea infestation in cats is frequently overlooked and possibly denied [ 12 ]. In a study conducted in 2007 in the UK, 48% of the owners whose pets had signs of an active flea infestation were unaware that their pets had fleas [ 13 ].…”
