Efficacy of Spirulina platensis in improvement of the reproductive performance and easing teratogenicity in hyperglycemic albino mice

Abstract: Objectives:The present study evaluates the therapeutic efficacy of cell suspension of Spirulina platensis (SP) on estrous cycle, fetal development and embryopathy in alloxan (AXN) induced hyperglycemic mice.Materials and Methods:Diabetes was induced by intra-peritoneal administration of AXN. Mice with blood glucose level above 200 mg/dl were divided into Group I (control), Group II (diabetic control), Group III (diabetic control mice fed with SP), and Group IV (control mice fed with SP). Litter counts, estrous… Show more

“…While, gestation period length and kindling rate were similar in G2 and G3 than in G1, but the difference was not significant (Table 2). Similarly, several authors discovered positive impact of Spirulina platensis on reproductive parameters in lambs (ElSabagh et al, 2014), poultry (Shanmugapriya et al, 2015) and mice (Pankaj, 2015). The positive effect of Spirulina platensis on reproductive measurements proved in the current study could be attributed to strong natural antioxidant (Abdel-Daim et al, 2015).…”

“…These compounds were also shown to reveal teratogenicity in a Danio rerio embryo experimental model [17,18]. However, the in vivo rodent models did not reveal any adverse effect of Chlorella or Spirulina supplementation on pregnancy outcome [20,21]; the use of the latter in pregnant women was shown by one study to correlate with oligohydramnios [22][23][24]. All in all, this highlights that exploring the presence of PMAs in commercially available microalgal supplements for human consumption is urgently needed.…”
