Efficacy of the Closed Suction Applied To Patients In Intensive Care Units with Different Techniques: A Nonrandomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of the closed suction system and different suction techniques in which oxygen and saline instillation were administered individually or in combination on the efficacy of suction, cardiopulmonary indicators, feelings and pain experienced by patients after suction. Method: This study was planned as an experimental and cross-sectional one. The study had a single group, and a pre-and post-test design (n=43). “…There are studies in the literature stating that endotracheal suctioning was a painful procedure. [10][11][12]30 Whereas some of these studies evaluated pain in closed-and open-system suctioning, others conducted research on pain assessment scales. Mohammadpour et al 10 examined changes in pain, oxygenation, and ventilation in open-and closed-system suctioning in cardiovascular surgery ICUs.…”

“…Dastdadeh et al 12 did not consider the presence of pain before the procedure as a criterion for sample selection. In the study by Gulsoy and Karagozoglu, 30 in which they evaluated closed-system suctioning with different methods in terms of hemodynamics and pain, patients with preprocedural pain were also included in the sample. Both studies concluded that the suctioning procedure is painful.…”
