Efficacy of three rotary NiTi instruments in removing gutta‐percha from root canals

Abstract: Under the experimental conditions, ProTaper left significantly less gutta-percha and sealer than Mtwo instruments. Complete removal of materials did not occur with any of the instrument systems investigated.

“…CT scanning was used in the present investigation in order to outweigh the limitations of the methodologies previously applied in endodontic retreatment studies, such as displacement of the filling debris during cleavage (1-5) and twodimensional imaging on a three-dimensional structure (6)(7)(8)(9). Although this methodology has been extensively employed in endodontic instrumentation research (18,19), its use in endodontic retreatment research is limited (10).…”

“…In the studies of Masiero and Barletta (6) and Gergi and Sabbagh (7), radiographs were taken after removing the filling material from the root canals, digitized and analyzed by means of software packages developed for civil engineering and architecture, the AutoCAD 2000 (Autodesk Inc., San Rafael, CA, USA) and AutoCAD 2004 (Mechanical Desktop Power Pack, Microsoft, Redmond, WA, USA), respectively. In recent studies (8,9), the specimens were rendered transparent, photographed using a digital camera attached to a microscope and the amount of residual filling material was calculated using an image-analysis software (Comef 4.0; OEG Messtechnik, Frankfurt, Germany). These methods have limitations since radiographic and photographic images provide only two-dimensional information of a three-dimensional structure.…”

“…This task can easily be accomplished with rotary files, which allow removal of the bulk of root filling material within a few minutes (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). However, recent studies have indicated that such a procedure performed on its own leaves a significant amount of root filling residue along the canal wall (4,(10)(11)(12).…”

“…However, within the consideration of the currently available re-treatment studies, the results have shown the remnant filling materials to be remained through the canal walls even if solvents or rotary/hand instruments have been applied. [16][17][18][19] Therefore, the re-treatment protocol has to be supported with some additional irrigation systems, medicaments and/or irrigants to obtain total remove of root filling material and to reach all the points in root canals regarding uninstrumented areas which depends on the complex anatomy.…”
