Efficacy of two low-dose oral tylosin regimens in controlling the relapse of diarrhea in dogs with tylosin-responsive diarrhea: a prospective, single-blinded, two-arm parallel, clinical field trial

Abstract: BackgroundDespite its wide acceptance as a treatment for canine chronic enteropathies, the macrolide antibiotic tylosin lacks official oral dosage recommendations. Not even textbooks share consensus about the dose; daily recommendations vary from 25 to 80 mg/kg and dosing intervals from one to three times daily. The objective of this prospective, single-blinded, two-arm parallel, clinical field trial was to determine whether doses of 5 mg/kg or 15 mg/kg tylosin administered orally once daily for seven days woul… Show more

“…Antibiotics such as tylosin and oxytetracycline have been shown to be effective in some dogs with CE. However, the response is typically short‐lived after cessation of treatment with one report of over 80% of dogs relapsing within a month . It remains unclear if response to treatment is due to modification of the microbiota via an antibiotic effect or other mechanisms such as anti‐inflammatory properties as shown in vitro for tylosin and oxytetracycline .…”

“…A trial with a 1-week course of tylosin had similar success rates to a 6-week course, and there were similar relapse rates of 88% of dogs within 2 months and 86% within 30 days, respectively (Westermarck et al . 2005, Kilpinen et al . 2014 ).…”

“…Large bowel diarrhoea was characterised by an increased frequency of defaecation, typically accompanied by excessive faecal mucus, haematochezia and tenesmus (Leib 2000;Lecoindre & Gaschen 2011), whereas small bowel diarrhoea was characterised by features such as anorexia, weight loss, melaena, increased faecal volume and watery faeces (Allenspach et al 2007;Volkmann et al 2017). At the time of enrolment of each new patient and weekly thereafter for the duration of the study, the authors would meet as a committee to discuss the ongoing management of individual cases, using evidence-based source material when available (Leib 2000;Westermarck et al 2005a,b;Allenspach et al 2007;Fogle & Bissett 2007;Hall 2011;Kilpinen et al 2011Kilpinen et al , 2014Lecoindre & Gaschen 2011;Chaitman et al 2016;Paap et al 2016;Volkmann et al 2017). The primary sources of evidence were articles derived from electronic searches using three medical, agricultural and/or biological databases: Medline, Agricola and CAB (Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International) Abstracts.…”
