Efficacy of using an air arthrogram for EUA and injection of the hip joint in adults

Abstract: IodineAir arthrogram a b s t r a c t Aim: Hip arthrography usually requires the injection of iodine based dyes which can cause complications. We wanted to determine the accuracy of using air for hip arthrography. Method: A prospective study was undertaken including all adults who had a hip arthrogram. We initially did an air arthrogram and subsequently injected iohexol to see if we were still in the joint. Results: Forty injections were done. Mean age 32 years. There was a 100% success rate with obtaining a po… Show more

“…In a previous study, air arthrograms were used to confirm the needle position in the hip joint, 44) and the accuracy of the needle position confirmed using a contrast agent arthrogram was reported as 100%. 21) The adverse effects associated with contrast agents include pain, swelling, and an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis. We used air arthrography to avoid these adverse events as well as any influence on the effect of HA.…”

“…Single intra-articular preparation of 2 ml of Hylan G-F 20 (Synvisc®; Sanofi K.K., Tokyo, Japan) was injected into each patient's affected hip in an out-patient setting after confirmation of the needle position using an air arthrogram 21) ; arthrocentesis was performed before the injection, when feasible.…”

“…Alternatively, air can be injected after aspiration to act as a contrast agent and to confirm intraarticular location, especially in cases of a dry tap (Fig. 2 ) [ 58 ]. Antibiotic therapy within the 48 h prior to aspiration has also been shown to decrease the diagnostic yield of joint aspiration [ 48 ].…”
