AimTo assess the effect of combining 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash with xylitol (XYL) chewing gum on Streptococcus mutans and biofilm levels among 8- to 12-year-old children.Materials and methodsSixty children aged 8 to 12 years were selected with moderate and high salivary S. mutans levels. They were divided into three groups of 20 children each: (1) XYL group where the subjects chewed XYL twice daily; (2) CHX where rinsing was done twice daily; and (3) combination of XYL and CHX group (XYL+CHX) where both the agents were used once daily. The S. mutans colony-forming units (CFUs) were counted by using the mitis salivarius agar plate at the beginning of the study and at 15 days, 1, 2, and 6 months from the start of the study.ResultsThe XYL+CHX group showed the maximum reduction in both the biofilm and S. mutans scores throughout the study period.ConclusionThe XYL+CHX combination reduced both the biofilm and S. mutans score significantly better than either XYL chewing gums or CHX mouthwash used alone.How to cite this articleSyed M, Chopra R, Shrivastava V, Sachdev V. Objetivo: avaliar a eficácia de um dentifrício, que contém em sua composição extratos vegetais e xilitol para inibição de Streptococcus mutans (UA159). Materiais e método: para verificação da atividade antimicrobiana, foram realizados ensaios in vitro de difusão de ágar, baseados na metodologia da norma M2A8 Anvisa. O estudo foi feito utilizando inóculo de 108 UFC/mL da cepa de S. mutans. O princípio básico foi a difusão de uma solução de dentifrício na superfície do ágar a partir de um disco impregnado. O ensaio foi realizado utilizando como controle negativo água deionizada estéril e como controle positivo clorexidina 0,12%, e foram comparados aos dentifrícios Orgânico Natural® e Colgate Total 12®. O resultado foi analisado a partir da medição dos halos de inibição (mm). Resultados: a clorexidina 0,12% teve maior halo de inibição (21,08 ± 1,02), seguida do dentifrício Orgânico Natural® (11,33 ± 4,35) e do dentifrício Colgate Total 12 (3,93 ± 4,67) P<0,05. Conclusão: a inibição da cepa de S. mutans evidenciada neste ensaio in vitro demonstra o potencial antimicrobiano do dentifrício Orgânico Natural®, mesmo como um possível auxiliar no controle do biofilme dental cariogênico.

Background Cariogenic microorganisms are the most important cause for occurrence of dental caries. Dentifrices and mouthwashes containing antimicrobial substances are proven to be effective in the eradication of these pathogens from the oral cavity. Aim To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of fluoride, chlorhexidine (CHX), herbal, and xylitol containing toothpastes and mouthwashes against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacillus (LB) in subjects within the age group of 18 to 22 years at time intervals of 1, 3, and 6 months. Materials and methods One hundred subjects were randomly divided into four groups. Group I: fluoride, group II: chlorhexidine, group III: herbal, group IV: xylitol and instructed to use toothpastes and mouthwashes containing the specific agents. Salivary samples were collected to evaluate the levels of S. mutans and LB at baseline, 1, 3, and 6 months. Bacterial levels were evaluated using caries risk test (CRT) kit. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and post hoc test. Results During intragroup comparison, S. mutans levels in group I showed statistically significant difference among the four time intervals. On intergroup comparison, S. mutans levels after 6 months for groups I, II, III, and IV were 1.12, 1.16, 1.28, and 1.4 respectively. Conclusion It can be concluded that fluoride, CHX, and xylitol showed a significant reduction in S. mutans and LB count after a time period of 6 months while herbal group did not show a significant reduction in S. mutans and LB count at any intervals.
