Efficiency Evaluation of Regional Sustainable Innovation in China: A Slack-Based Measure (SBM) Model with Undesirable Outputs

Abstract: An efficiency evaluation of China's regional sustainable innovation, evaluating industrial waste and total energy consumption, is the main research subject in this paper. It focuses on a regional measurement and comparison of these undesirable outputs of Chinese firm activities, such as industrial SO 2 and CO 2 emissions. By applying a data envelopment analysis-slack-based measure (DEA-SBM) model with undesirable outputs indicators, the regional innovation efficiency was evaluated for 30 provinces in China, fr… Show more

“…The measurement of agricultural GHG emissions sources is a critical link in the research on agricultural GHG emissions. First of all, in terms of the definition of agriculture, there is not only research on narrow agriculture [25,26], which only refers to the planting industry but also research which analyses broad agriculture, including animal husbandry [27,28]. Secondly, considering regional studies on agricultural GHG emissions, most of them take the whole country or a province as the research object [29], while studies on the heterogeneity between different regions was rare [30].…”

“…Most eco-efficiency measurement models choose "input + expected output + undesired output, " and the measurement methods mainly include data envelopment analysis including DEA model (Picazo-Tadeo et al, 2011;Yasmeen et al, 2020;Moutinho and Madaleno, 2021) and SBM mode (Li and Shi, 2014;Cecchini et al, 2018;Xu et al, 2020), and life cycle assessments (Avadí et al, 2014;Lorenzo-Toja et al, 2015;Beltrán-Estevea et al, 2017). As a systematic analysis method used to evaluate the relative efficiency of the same type of decision-making units based on various inputs and outputs, the data envelopment analysis is widely used to measure eco-efficiency.…”
