Omega, 54, Additional Information:• This paper was accepted for publication in the journal AbstractIn this paper we consider the use of data envelopment analysis (DEA) for the assessment of efficiency of units whose output profiles exhibit specialisation. An example of this is found in agriculture where a large number of different crops may be produced in a particular region, but only a few farms actually produce each particular crop. Because of the large number of outputs, the use of conventional DEA models in such applications results in a poor efficiency discrimination. We overcome this problem by specifying production trade-offs between different outputs, relying on the methodology of Podinovski (2004). The main idea of our approach is to relate various outputs to the production of the main output. We illustrate this methodology by an application of DEA involving agricultural farms in different regions ofTurkey. An integral part of this application is the elicitation of expert judgements in order to formulate the required production trade-offs. Their use in DEA models results in a significant improvement of the efficiency discrimination. The proposed methodology should also be of interest to other applications of DEA where units may exhibit specialization, such as applications involving hospitals or bank branches.

Conventional DEA models make no hypothesis concerning the internal operations in a static situation. To open the "black box" and work with dynamic assessment issues synchronously, we put forward a hybrid model for evaluating the relative efficiencies of a set of DMUs over an observed time period with a composite of network DEA and dynamic DEA. We vertically deal with intermediate products between divisions with assignable inputs in the network structure and, horizontally, we extend network structure by means of a dynamic pattern with unrelated activities between two succeeding periods. The hybrid dynamic network DEA model proposed in this paper enables us to (i) pry into the internal operations of DEA by another network structure, (ii) obtain dynamic change of period efficiency, and (iii) gain the overall dynamic efficiency of DMUs over the entire observed periods. We finally illustrate the calculation procedure of the proposed approach by a numerical example.

In the last two decades, complex and detailed DEA models that consider the internal structure of DMUs have been proposed by several authors. This chapter describes the mathematical formulations, along with their main variants, extensions and applications, of three large and popular model families: network (with special emphasis on multi-stage), shared flow (also known as multi-component or multi-activity), and multi-level models. Each family is a different generalization of the same elementary internal structure. This review extends and updates the classification presented in Castelli et al. (Ann Oper Res 173(1):207–235, 2010)
