Efficiency of low-level laser therapy for orthodontic tooth movement: a review

Abstract: Purpose Orthodontic treatment can last between 2 and 3 years. These long treatment times can significantly decrease patient cooperation and yield adverse effects. This review aimed to evaluate the clinical effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement. Materials and methods We searched the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and EMBASE and included only studies evaluating the effect of LLLT on orthodontic human tooth movement, according to inclusion criteria. Results We inclu… Show more

“…These findings were consistent with previous literature, which LLLT was likely to have a positive effect on healing, nerve regeneration, inflammatory process, pain reduction, proliferation of osteoblasts, bone remodeling, root resorption, and tooth movement. [ 77 78 79 80 ] Therefore, LLLT can be considered as significantly supportive for an orthodontic practice.…”

“…There is a weak evidence support the application of pulsed electromagnetic field electromagnetic to accelerate OTM (8,9) . Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been used to hasten OTM in recent years (10,11) . Colson et al, 2017 stated that LLLT can be effective for speeding OTM (10) .…”

“…For its great effects, low power laser therapy has become a popular treatment modality. [1] Lasers can be classi ed into high-and low-level lasers where a high-level laser can lead to tissue ablation and cutting, while a low-level laser is able to in ltrate the tissues [2] In 1967, Dr. Endre Mester was the rst to observe the effects of low level laser therapy LLLT in mice [3], which also known as photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). PBMT relies on applying light from a low-energy laser or light emitting diodes (LEDs) lights with speci c wavelength spectrum of 600-1110 nm to stimulate cellular and tissue responses [4] [5, 6].…”
