In many agricultural settings, the high cost of inorganic fertilizers has led farmers to resort to using composted soil from large dumpsites for soil amendment, in some cases, farmers even level smaller dumpsites and utilize the land for crop cultivation. This study investigated the concentrations of trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Fe, Pb, Zn) in dumpsite compost, soil for cultivation, maize plants, and spinach vegetables, comparing them against the limits established by Directive 2014/118/EU. The results revealed significant variations in trace metal levels across the different samples analysed. Dumpsite compost exhibited elevated concentrations of Cd (6.00 mg/kg), Cr (89.00 mg/kg), Cu (21.00 mg/kg), Mn (101.00 mg/kg), Ni (17.12 mg/kg), Fe (1570.02 mg/kg), Pb (29.31 mg/kg), and Zn (315.18 mg/kg), surpassing the EU limits for Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Conversely, soil for cultivation demonstrated lower trace metal concentrations, with Cd (0.40 mg/kg), Cr (21.31 mg/kg), Cu (1.72 mg/kg), Mn (12.98 mg/kg), Ni (2.43 mg/kg), Fe (520.11 mg/kg), Pb (0.98 mg/kg), and Zn (67.31 mg/kg), still exceeding EU limits for Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Zn. Maize plants and spinach vegetables showed varying levels of trace metals, with concentrations generally lower than those in dumpsite compost but still exceeding EU limits for several metals. The calculated index values indicated significant contamination in all samples, with values less than 1. The metal uptake by plants, as indicated by the index values, followed the order Cd > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn > Fe > Mn. This study underscores the potential health risks associated with consuming crops grown in contaminated soil and highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and remediation efforts to ensure food safety and environmental health.

This study was conducted in July 2021 until October 2022 at kanipanka research farm, Sulaimani governorate, IKR with GPS readings of 35 0 22' 25.3 " N, 45 0 43 ' 24.5" E to test, the influence of five levels (0, 14, 28, 42 and 56 ton ha -1 ) of some treatments such as control (a1), rise husk bio char (a2), oak charcoal (a3) and poultry manure (a5) which equivalent to 0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.2 and 1.6% w/w% of soil, also five levels (0, 12.5, 25, 37.5 and 50 kg ha -1 ) of Humic acid (a4) to examine the quantity and quality of sweet corn. Additionally 240kg ha -1 of triple super phosphate was added to each experimental unit. The result showed that the poultry manure has a great effect on sweet corn compared to biochars due to high content of phosphorus and nitrogen in poultry manure, also biochars such as rice husk and charcoal were effect on TSS%, P concentration in seed and plants. The highest yield (20.61ton ha -1 ) was recorded from the interaction treatments of (42 ton ha -1 ) of poultry manure, also the highest protein %, oil % and chlorophyll content (14.90%, 5.93% and 44.80 SPAD value) were recorded from the interaction treatments of 56 ton ha -1 of poultry manure.

Melastoma malabathricum L. (Melastomataceae) is a widely distributed tropical shrub that grows in Southeast Asia. Recent research found that M. malabathricum has a bioremediatory potential that can accumulate high concentrations of toxic metals such as Al, Pb, As, and Cr. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the metal hyperaccumulation in M. malabathricum from various populations and their relation to soil edaphic factors. We collected mature leaves and soils of M. malabathricum from 15 different populations in Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, and Pahang in Peninsular Malaysia. These 15 populations consist of lowland forests, dump sites, riparian, oil palm and rubber plantations, paddy fields, and mining sites. We found that M. malabathricum accumulated high concentrations of Al (3.45±1.58 to 8.697±1.61 mg g-1) followed by Fe (1.02±0.02 to 1.07±0.04 mg g-1), Pb (0.013±0.001 to 0.016±0.001 mg g-1), As (0.008±0.005 to 0.23±0.004 mg g-1), and Cr (0.005±0.0003 to 0.02±0.01 mg g-1). The highest concentration of soil Al was 85.95±5.00 mg g-1, Fe with 69.960±7.47mg g-1, Pb with 0.192±0.03 mg g-1, As with 0.156±0.06 mg g-1 and Cr with 0.133±0.03 mg g-1. We found no significant association between high foliar metal concentrations of the metals (Al, Pb, As & Cr) with the soil chemical properties but some soil metal elements were intercorrelated with foliar metal concentrations. Understanding the potential of M. malabathricum in accumulating high levels of metal elements, provides useful information for phytoremediation works. Further research is required to investigate the mechanism uptake and tolerance of heavy metals in M. malabathricum.
