Efficient characterization of harmonic and intermodulation distortion effects in dispersive radio over fiber systems with direct laser modulation

Abstract: results from the Mie series. But for higher values of , the PMCHWT formulation gives incorrect results, while the present formulation still agrees with the Mie series. For ϭ 10 5 S/m, ͉ r ͉ ϭ 1.8 ϫ 10 11 and the skin depth is about 16 mm. The present formulation still works well, even when is as high as 10 8 S/m and the corresponding skin depth is about 0.5 mm. So the present formulation can work with much higher conductivities than the PMCHWT formulation, due to the effective suppression of the error contribu… Show more

“…This can be explained with the fact that, for each ðS PD ; M PD Þ pair, ΔI DCout ðtÞ and ΔI RFout ðtÞ are both similarly affected by the resulting values of the surface integrals b mn [see Eqs. (6), (12), and (21)], which, in turn, influence in a similar manner both numerator and denominator of ΔI RFNORM and ΔI DCNORM .…”

“…This result must be taken into consideration at the design stage of this kind of optical system because, unlike the case of typical radioover-single-mode-fiber links, where the combined effect of LDs' frequency chirp and chromatic dispersion of SMFs becomes a primary cause of reduction in performance after some tens of kilometers [12]; in this case, the detrimental effect of the LDs' frequency chirp cannot be neglected, even for short-range (a few hundred meters long) RoMMF links.…”

“…in combinations with Plastic Optical Fibers within in-building networks [12][13] or in combination with MMFs within data centers [14], care must be taken in front of the possible impairments due to the multimodal behavior of SSMFs that operate at the 850 nm [15]. The presence of multimodal behavior would indeed be absent if expensive VCSELs operating at 1.3 and 1.55 were utilized , in which the major SSMF-related impairments could just be ascribed to optical nonlinear effects and/or to chromatic dispersion [16][17]. However, appropriate countermeasures have been proposed, which can prevent this last impairment cause to be critical [18][19].…”

“…Analog Radio over Fiber (A-RoF) links are meant to meet the ever-increasing requirements of wireless distribution services from the base station (BS) to remote antenna heads (RAH). The deployment of A-RoF has been seen in different scenarios ranging from inhouse to outdoor applicative scenarios [1][2][3][4]. Since, A-RoF systems can serve as a block for cloud radio access network (C-RAN) which connects the base band units (BBU) to remote radio heads (RRHs).…”
