Efficient decomposition of cosmic microwave background polarization maps into pureE, pureB, and ambiguous components

Abstract: Separation of the B component of a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization map from the much larger E component is an essential step in CMB polarimetry. For a map with incomplete sky coverage, this separation is necessarily hampered by the presence of "ambiguous" modes which could be either E or B modes. I present an efficient pixel-space algorithm for removing the ambiguous modes and separating the map into "pure" E and B components. The method, which works for arbitrary geometries, does not involve ge… Show more

“…In this paper we would like to highlight a novel method based on decomposition of the Stokes parameters Q and U into the (Q E , U E ) and (Q B , U B ) families, associated with the E and B modes respectively, 1 which satisfy (Q, U ) = (Q E , U E ) + (Q B , U B ). Based on this representation we will investigate the polarization intensity maps for the E family and the B family,…”

“…The E/B-mode decomposition can be done either on the shear field itself (e.g. Bunn et al 2003;Bunn 2011), or at the level of correlation functions (e.g. ).…”

“…However, it is important to stress, that component separation and extraction of the primordial CMB polarised signal usually takes place in Q, U domain and only then is converted into E/B components. This conversion is not local and for different masks is accompanied by the presence of different E-to-B leakage terms [5][6][7][8][9].…”
