Efficient gas-phase generation of coherent vacuum ultraviolet radiation

Abstract: We report the demonstration of a pulsed atomic lead (Pb) vapor-based vacuum ultraviolet frequency converter from 233 to 186 nm with unity photon-conversion eff iciency. This conversion is attained without phase matching. © 1999 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 190.2620, 190.4410, 270.1670, 020.1670 The techniques of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be employed to create a nonlinear response at a given wavelength that is equal in magnitude to the linear response at that wavelength. “…Another mechanism proposed recently is referred to as nonlinear optics with maximum coherence [3,7]. The idea is here to prepare and maintain the atoms in a coherent superposition of atomic states |1 and |2 with equal amplitudes.…”

“…Coherent quantum control of optical processes has proven to be a powerful tool to manipulate refraction, absorption, transparency, gain and conversion of electromagnetic radiation (for a review see, e.g., [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8]). Among the recent achievements are the slowing down of the light group speed to a few m/s, highly-efficient frequency up-conversion, squeezed quantum state light sources and optical switches for quantum information processing on this basis [9,10,11,12,13,14,15], and judicious control and feasibilities of near 100% population transfer between the quantum energy levels [16]. Much interest has been shown in the physics and diverse practical schemes of lasing without population inversion (see, e.g., [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,17]).…”

“…Radiation fields have been used to produce transparency in experiments on red to blue frequency conversion with molecular sodium [5], and on enhanced four-wave mixing with doped crystals [6]. Recently, blue to UV [7] and UV to VUV [8] conversion in atomic Pb vapor have been reached with almost unity photon-conversion efficiency.…”
