A participatory mobile sensing system is designed to enable clients to voluntarily collect environmental data using embedded sensors and a mobile device while going about their daily activities. Due to the spatiotemporal nature of the data, and the significant benefits of the data to the general public, it is necessary to employ an efficient and effective query processing model for the mobile clients to access the data that can be visualized via an interactive multimedia interface. This article introduces a unified on-demand and data broadcast model to serve queries in the context of a mobile sensing system. The contributions of this article include the following: (i) it presents a novel data structure and indexing method to support the system; (ii) it provides flexibility for the client to issue query using on-demand or broadcast channel according to the server load and broadcast schedule; (iii) it enables new data access and processing for the mobile client; and (iv) it is designed for a multiple channels/receivers environment in a 4G wireless network. The proposed model uses a holistic query processing approach for the mobile sensing system that offers substantial efficiency and autonomy for mobile clients when retrieving data. The results of the experiments undertaken affirm the effectiveness of its performance.

The deployment of wireless data broadcast to empower mobile information services as a resource-conserving means offers significant benefits due to the scalability feature offered by the technology. In this paper, we present a novel and holistic data broadcast management approach in 4 G wireless networks with multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) antennae. The proposed scheme consists of three elements, namely: (i) broadcast ordering; (ii) Global indexing; and (iii) merging data structure. With the integration of these elements, we expect to obtain substantial efficiency for mobile computing clients when retrieving data on-air. We have experimentally evaluated the performance of the proposed model including comparison with the relevant schemes. The results from the experiments affirm the effectiveness of our proposed approach in respect to minimizing query access time and conserving energy utilization of the clients.

Wireless data broadcasting seems to be an efficient way for dissemination of data to a large number of mobile users. Because of its scalability and flexibility, the service providers use this technology to resolve request of thousands of users in one single response. Full text search is the latest area of research in wireless data broadcasting. Access time and tuning time are the two metrics for evaluation of an indexing technique. In this paper, we propose an air indexing technique based on the dictionary data structure namely Dict-Based Air Indexing Technique for full text search over wireless broadcast stream that utilizes hash-tables. We also propose algorithms for the implementation of the technique. We analyze, evaluate and compare its performance with existing schemes. The results from simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed technique is the most latency and energy efficient air indexing technique for full text searches.
