Efficient path planning for multiple transportation robots under various loading conditions

Abstract: The article proposes a new path planning method for a multi-robot system for transportation with various loading conditions. For a given system, one needs to distribute given pickup and delivery jobs to the robots and find a path for each robot while minimizing the sum of travel costs. The system has multiple robots with different payloads. Each job has a different required minimum payload, and as a result, job distribution in this situation must take into account the difference in payload capacities of robots… Show more

“…A robot can be defined as a programmable machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically that can substitute for humans and replicate human actions. Industrial robots have been around for over three decades now and are currently being used in various industries, including manufacturing (Belk, 2017), transportation (Bae & Chung, 2019;Maurer, Christian Gerdes, Lenz, & Winner, 2016), agriculture (De Koning & Rodenburg, 2004), healthcare and medicine (Hung, 2020), and logistics (Min, 2010).…”

“…Gaining popularity in the second half of the 20th century, robots have been used in various industries, such as manufacturing, agriculture, transportation and aviation (Bae and Chung, 2019; Belk, 2017; De Koning and Rodenburg, 2004; Maurer et al , 2016). However, current possibilities and application alternatives that emerged with robotic technologies were unheard of in the not-so-distant past, with service robots now employed in various hospitality settings as a result of the advancements in human-centered robots and artificial intelligence (AI) (Li, 2015; Tung and Law, 2017).…”

“…A primal-dual based heuristic for planning robot paths with different loading conditions is proposed in [16]. Since the robot has a wide variety of payloads, the time consumption and work handling of the system is heterogeneous.…”
