Efficient propagation of an endangered medicinal plant Jurinea dolomiaea Boiss in the North Western Himalaya using rhizome cuttings under ex situ conditions

Abstract: Jurinea dolomiaea is an important medicinal and aromatic plant species of Kashmir Himalaya. Due to its tremendous overexploitation the species has been listed as endangered for Himalayan region. In this study we carried out the propagation of J. dolomiaea using rhizome cuttings. Propagation through rhizome cuttings is a means towards conserving the species and making available planting material of this species for cultivation. Bringing more species under large-scale cultivation helps reduce the pressure on the… Show more

“…The limited availability of seeds and the heterogeneous nature of seedlings pose constraints on propagation, despite the plant’s local invasiveness via rhizomes. Although rhizomes and stem cuttings are considered as alternative methods for propagation [ 8 , 12 , 13 , 14 ], they come with inherent limitations in large-scale production. The challenges encompass insufficient material supply, restricted seasonal propagation, and exposure of plant materials to various unfavorable factors, such as pests, pathogens, and drought [ 8 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…One of the effective technique could be root splitting and rhizome splitting for those species having long period of seed dormancy. Important plants having commercial and medicinal value are being cultivated through mass propagation by using their vegetative rhizome parts and roots such as Ginger (Rahman et al, 2009), Jurinea dolomiaea, Aconitum atrox, Nardostachys jatamansi (Banday et al, 2014), stem cuttings in Strychnos henningsii (Kipkemoi et al, 2013), through sucker plantlets in Musa species (Baiyeri, 2005). The total percentage of species threatened in the Araliaceae family is 16.3 and one of the over-harvested species in Araliaceae family is the Panax pseudoginseng (Scippmann et al, 2002).…”

“…Most effective and economic technique of propagation is through seed, but certain species fails to propagate through seeds due to poor seed setting, long seed dormancy like Aconitum atrox, Panax pseudoginseng etc. (Banday et al, 2014). One of the effective technique could be root splitting and rhizome splitting for those species having long period of seed dormancy.…”
