Light-emitting diode (LED) technology is one of the most important light sources in the plant industry for enhancing growth and specific metabolites in plants. In this study, we analyzed the growth, primary and secondary metabolites of 10 days old kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) sprouts exposed to different LED light conditions. The results showed that the highest fresh weight was achieved under red LED light, whereas the highest shoot and root lengths were recorded below the blue LED light. Furthermore, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed the presence of 13 phenylpropanoid compounds, 8 glucosinolates (GSLs), and 5 different carotenoids. The phenylpropanoid and GSL contents were highest under blue LED light. In contrast, the carotenoid content was found to be maximum beneath white LED light. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) of the 71 identified metabolites using HPLC and gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) showed a clear separation, indicating that different LEDs exhibited variation in the accumulation of primary and secondary metabolites. A heat map and hierarchical clustering analysis revealed that blue LED light accumulated the highest amount of primary and secondary metabolites. Overall, our results demonstrate that exposure of kohlrabi sprouts to blue LED light is the most suitable condition for the highest growth and is effective in increasing the phenylpropanoid and GSL content, whereas white light might be used to enhance carotenoid compounds in kohlrabi sprouts.

Causes and Conditions for Reduced Cultivation and Consumption of Underutilized Crops: Is There a Solution?

Underutilized crops are described as plant species that were once popular but have since been neglected by mainstream agriculture for several reasons. A widespread monoculture agricultural revolution and a tendency toward more high-yielding varieties were the main reasons for the underutilization of certain crops. Remarkably, underutilized crops have endured even without formal support, which indicates that besides their exceptional nutritional value and beneficial effects on human health they contain desirable traits that could be useful for building resilience and adaptation to climate-changing environments. As such, the re-establishment of these plants to the global food system is desired. To find solutions for overcoming the obstacles for the reintroduction of these crops and to bring the neglected species back to cultivation and utilization, a comprehensive understanding of the potential reasons for the reduced cultivation of these crops is necessary. In this article, potential reasons, causes, and conditions for the decreased cultivation and consumption of certain crops are discussed with a presentation of case studies of the following species: buckwheat, lentils, green leafy vegetables, sow thistle, grass pea, cucumber melon, and eggplant. Finally, potential solutions for overcoming the identified obstacles associated with both the cultivation and consumption of certain underutilized crops and neglected species are provided. Documented benefits of the production of various crops in agricultural production systems and the beneficial effects of increased consumption of these crops for human health should stimulate and encourage people from various disciplines, i.e., farmers, researchers, agronomists, nutritionists, and policymakers to join the efforts to bring neglected species back to cultivation and consumption.

Indonesia as a mega-biodiversity country has a very diverse diversity of insects. The diversity of these insects has both beneficial and detrimental roles. The beneficial role of insects is that they act as pollinators, predators of pests and regulators of wild plant populations, while the detrimental roles of insects are plant-eating pests and disease vectors in plants. Insects have many habitats, one of which is purple eggplant or solanum melongena. Eggplant is cultivated for consumption and contains many ingredients. This plant is widely cultivated because it contains nutrients consisting of minerals and vitamins such as A, B and C, is low in calories and fat, and contains some protein, fiber and carbohydrates. This research is included in the quantitative descriptive research. This research is located on the agricultural land of PT. BIO, which is located at Jl. Banjar Sari No. 38, Dusun Awisurat, Tanjungsari, Kec. Tanjungsari, Sumedang Regency, West Java and takes place for 2 weeks in November 2022. Insect data collection uses insect nets and data that can be analyzed using relative abundance and Shannon-Wiener diversity index values. The insects found consisted of 6 orders namely Diptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Mantodea and Hymenoptera. The six orders consist of 9 families. The eggplant planting area has a Shannon-Wiener diversity index value of 1.8 so that the planting area conditions are close to natural conditions with an index value of > 2. From the findings, insects can be classified into four groups based on their role in eggplant plants. Based on their roles, six pest species, three predator species, one pollinator species and one non-pest species. The abundance of insect species in eggplant planting fields has low criteria except for Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata which is moderate. The level of insect diversity in purple eggplant plantings was moderate, with the species that had the highest abundance being Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata
