R ESPECT for the privacy of a man's own thoughts and tolerance of personal idiosyncrasies are among the basic values of our culture. So long as a person "behaves himself" within rather broad limits and "does his work" effectively, we grant him full privileges as a citizen and sanctity within the confines of his feelings, desires, and opinions. This, in a word, is our conception of personal freedom.
