“…Its occurrence in the Bozovici Basin is here reported for the first time for the Miocene deposits of Romania. In the Cenozoic floras of Greece, Pronephrium stiriacum was cited from the Oligocene beds at Lagina and Fylakton, Evros Region (Velitzelos et al 2002); from the Lower Miocene sequences at Grevena and Mudros, Lemnos Region (Berger 1953;Süss and Velitzelos 1993); and from the Upper Miocene deposits in Strymon Basin (Velitzelos 1993) and of the Platana Formation (Kleinhölter 1994;Velitzelos et al 2014). In southwestern France, described Pronephrium stiriacum from the Miocene of Arjuzanx.…”

“…From Lemnos, numerous remnants of fossil woods have been collected, sometimes from excavations, from around the villages of Fergani, Romanou, Moudros, Varos, Rossopouli, Portianou, Thanos and Kontias, and on the hill of Paradisi, representing the specific "Petrified Forest of Limnos". However, a few lignotaxa have already been described from there: Laurinoxylon ehrendorferi and Cornoxylon pappi, described by Berger (1953), and later, a problematic conifer: Pinoxylon parenchymatosum Süss & Velitzelos (1993) later revised as Lesbosoxylon by Süss & Velitzelos (2010). A study of new samples collected from Lemnos is in progress, representing wood of angiosperms and conifers (Iamandei, unpublished data).…”

“…In addition to the fossilised leaves, the genus or the species of the trees can also be determined by the micro-analysis of the internal structure of the fossilised wood. The palaeobotanical study of the fossils permits certain conclusions to be drawn on the composition of the forest which was dominated by higher plant groups such as angiosperms (flowering plants) and gymnosperms (conifers) with a low proportion of pteridophytes (ferns) (Suss and Velitzelos 1993, 1994, Velitzelos and Zouros 1997, 1998, 2000.…”
