El controvertido complejo Burkholderia cepacia, un grupo de especies promotoras del crecimiento vegetal y patógenas de plantas, animales y humanos

Abstract: The Burkholderia cepacia complex is a group of 22 species, which are known as opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised people, especially those suffering from cystic fibrosis. It is also found in nosocomial infections and is difficult to eradicate due to intrinsic resistance to several antibiotics. The species have large genomes (up to 9 Mbp), distributed into 2-5 replicons. These features significantly contribute to genome plasticity, which makes them thrive in different environments like soil, water, pla… Show more

“…Analyzing these studies, there is no doubt that several strains of Enterobacter spp., of the Burkholderia cepacia complex, Pseudomonas aeruginosa , among others, can be isolated from soils and have the capacity of promoting plant growth (e.g. Adesemoye et al 2008; Daur et al 2018; Jung et al 2018; Rojas-Rojas et al 2019; Roychowdhury et al 2019). However, they cannot be used as inoculants.…”

“…In recent years, Burkholderia s.l. was divided into several genera and it is currently classified into Burkholderia sensu stricto (s.s.), Paraburkholderia (Sawana et al, 2014), Caballeronia (Dobritsa and Samadpour, 2016), Robbsia (Rojas-Rojas et al, 2019) and the recently proposed additional genera Mycetohabitans and Trinickia (Estrada- de Los Santos et al, 2018).…”

“…pseudomallei can cause melioidosis in humans and animals (Limmathurotsakul et al, 2016). Another group of Burkholderia, Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) is a group comprising at least 20 species which are known to be opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised patients, especially those suffering cystic fibrosis (Rojas-Rojas et al, 2019;Leitão et al, 2017).…”
