This article is the result of a research project on a proposal of change in the academic offer of the Conversation Courses of the School of Modern Languages at the University of Costa Rica. This study shows the results obtained through a questionnaire given to the advanced students of the program and different opinions of people who are related to the process of teaching English as a second or foreign language. Finally, some recommendations will be given to the administration of the program to put the proposal into practice.Key words: organizational change, english for specific purposes, teaching english, english courses ResumenEste artículo es el resultado de una investigación sobre una propuesta de cambio en la gestión académica del Programa de Cursos de Conversación de la Escuela de Lenguas Modernas de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Este estudio comprende los resultados de un instrumento administrado a los estudiantes del último nivel en el idioma inglés y opiniones de diferentes personas involucradas en la enseñanza de este idioma. Hernández (2008) explained that, in 2006 and 2007, the School of Modern Languages of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) conducted a research project whose main objective was to analyze the abilities that English teachers from UCR needed to meet the necessities of the country so that those skills could be used for the teaching practicum course of the Master's Program in English Teaching as a Foreign Language. The research had two goals: a) to implement a diagnosis with the current necessities of the country regarding English teaching to determine the abilities that are required for English teachers and b) to develop a guide with the results obtained to take them into consideration for this teaching practicum.…”

This essay aims at analyzing the significance of the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach in Costa Rica. In addition, the authors scrutinized and compared different sources, such as journals, digital books, web pages, and others in order to provide relevant information regarding ESP, for instance, the aim of ESP based on its definition, its types, its objectives, and the effects of the absence of this approach in the learning process and the curriculum of the students as future employees, considering that Costa Rica does not have enough specialists in the area yet. Some programs to teach the target language for different majors need to be redesigned in order to guarantee the students a learning process based on the professional profile that they want to achieve, their needs, and their professional field. Likewise, this paper also explains the effects of the lack of ESP in the country. Hence, contemplating the effectiveness of making use of ESP to learn the target language can allow the education system of the country to take advantage of the benefits and opportunities that ESP represents for the nation.

Este artículo pretende diagnosticar las condiciones institucionales, docentes, estudiantiles y de plan de estudios para analizar la posibilidad de ofertar un curso de la malla curricular en el idioma inglés ubicado en los planes de las carreras de las Facultades de Ingeniería y Artes en la Sede Rodrigo Facio de la ucr. La investigación, completada durante el segundo semestre del 2016, se ha llevado a cabo dada la necesidad de mejorar la formación profesional con destrezas avanzadas en un segundo idioma (inglés) a estudiantes de educación superior. Se sigue un método cuantitativo en el cual se emplea la encuesta electrónica y la entrevista como las principales técnicas para recolectar la información. Los datos demuestran que el 66% de los directores de las diferentes escuelas ha considerado ofertar un curso de su carrera en inglés mientras que el 94% de los estudiantes estaría dispuesto a matricular un curso de su carrera en inglés. En cuanto a los docentes, más del 60% tiene la capacidad y está anuente a ofrecer cursos de su especialidad en inglés. El estudio concluye que, en su mayoría, tanto directores como estudiantes y docentes apoyarían un cambio curricular de esta naturaleza. Asimismo, la Escuela de Lenguas Modernas estaría dispuesta a apoyar y dar seguimiento a la enseñanza de idiomas a través de este proyecto. También se concluye que el nivel de inglés de la población estudiantil y el aspecto presupuestario son las dos razones principales que pueden obstaculizar esta idea.
