Abstract: Feathers, nails and beaks of one hundred and twenty common birds in Nigeria, Chicken [50], Ducks [20], Turkeys [15] and Pigeons [35], were examined using the soil plate technique for their mycoflora. 15 species of fungi were recovered and they belong to the genera Chrysosporium, Trichophyton, Microsporum, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Mucor Rhizopus, Penicillium and Trichoderma. Microsporum gypseum was the species most frequently isolated (35% of the samples). The most common genus was Chrysosporium and C. keratinoph… Show more

“…These species were isolated previously, but with different frequency, from students' nails (Abdel-Hafez and El-Sharouny 1990), cloven-hooves and horns of goats and sheep (Abdel-Hafez et al, 1990) and from domestic birds nails (Efountoye and Fashanu, 2001). …”

“…It was the most present species both in Anas platyrhynchos and in Phasianus colchicus , and has been cited in the checklist by Hubalek [ 6 ] to be cultured in conidial form or in the teleomorphic status ( Aphanoascus keratinophilum ) from these species, along with isolates from Pica pica . This fungal species was the more frequent Chrysosporium recovered from birds in Nigeria [ 25 ] and in Bahrain [ 11 ]. On the other hand, the composition of superficial oils and fats is reported to frequently affect the fungal growth, but Ch.…”

“…In Nigeria, reports on the prevalence of dermatophytosis in domestic animals and cattle, in particular, are scanty [7]. Earlier studies on dermatophytoses of domesticated animals in different parts of the country in Ibadan, Oyo State [8], in Zaria, Kaduna State [9], in Oyo State [10] and a more recent report from Nsuka, Enugu State [11], did not cover cattle. In the study conducted in Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Kogi and Delta States of Nigeria [12], only 55 out of a total of 538 animals in that study were cattle.…”
