A new medium surface area and non-microporous TiO 2 -b-SiC photocatalytic material was successfully obtained according to an extension of the Shape Memory Synthesis (SMS) method, and following a three step procedure. A high surface area TiO 2 supported on an activated charcoal precursor was prepared in a first step by the sol-gel precipitation of titanium tetraisopropoxide in the presence of activated charcoal powder. The second step consisted of a gas-solid reaction between this precursor and SiO vapors at 1300 uC under dynamic vacuum which formed TiC-b-SiC, by carboreduction of SiO vapors and TiO 2 into b-SiC and TiC respectively. The final step was oxidation in air at temperatures ranging from 420 uC to 600 uC which produced the TiO 2 -b-SiC material, using the high resistance of b-SiC towards oxidation to selectively form TiO 2 . The gross morphology of the activated charcoal precursor was maintained during the carburization and the subsequent oxidation processes according to the SMS concept. Both TiO 2 and the b-SiC semiconductor phases were in intimate contact in the same grain of catalyst, without the usually problematic post-synthesis shaping of high mechanical strength SiC-based materials and using no binder. The TiO 2 -to-SiC ratio could be directly tuned by adjusting the TiO 2 content of the precursor, whereas the anatase-to-rutile ratio could be modified by changing the post-synthesis calcination temperature, without altering the b-SiC properties or significantly increasing the average TiO 2 particle size.

To significantly reduce the charging time of commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), it is essential to control the surface properties of graphite anodes because the charging process involves sluggish interfacial kinetics between graphite and the electrolyte. For the effective surface modification of graphite, herein we demonstrate the surface decoration with titanium carbide (TiC) nanocrystals onto graphite particles via a simple wetcoating process. The high electrical conductivity, low Li + adsorption energy, and small surface diffusion barrier of the TiC nanocrystals facilitate fast Li + adsorption and migration in the graphite surface by reducing the overpotential upon the charging process. The feasibility of the TiC nanocrystal-decorated graphite (TiC@AG) anode is thoroughly examined with an in-depth understanding of the interfacial reaction mechanism. Furthermore, the full-cell with a commercial cathode (LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ) and TiC@AG anode demonstrates an impressive capacity retention (94.5%) after 300 cycles under fast-charging condition (3 Ccharging and 1 C-discharging) without any sign of Li plating. The charging time of the TiC@AG full-cell was estimated at 16.2 min (80% of state of charge), which is substantially shorter than that of the artificial graphite full-cell. Our findings offer practical insights into the design principles of advanced graphite anodes, contributing to the realization of fast-charging LIBs.

Aluminothermic reduction of K 2 TiF 6 in the presence of C, B, or N 2 was investigated as a low exothermic combustion process for synthesizing nanoparticles of titanium ceramics such as TiC, TiB 2 , and TiN. Sample pellets were prepared by mixing powders of K 2 TiF 6 , Al, and non-metal (C, B) powders in stoichiometric ratios. Experiments were conducted at room temperature under either an Ar or N 2 atmosphere. The combustion parameters were estimated from the temperature-time profiles, measured in the combustion wave using thermocouples. The reaction drastically proceeds within seconds, raising the temperature to 890-1170 C. The size of TiC, TiB 2 , and TiN nanoparticles prepared by the developed approach were, respectively, 5-30 nm, 10-60 nm, and 70-100 nm.
