Elastic properties of the rare-earth dititanatesR2Ti2O

Abstract: We have performed ultrasonic measurements on the α-pyrochlore spin compounds R 2 Ti 2 O 7 , R = Tb, Dy, and Ho. A distinct dip appears around 80 K, especially in transverse modes (C 11 − C 12 )/2 and C 44 as a function of temperature in Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 compounds. This anomaly may correspond to a structural change detected by the temperature dependence of the permittivity and of the loss-angle tangent. No distinct anomaly was observed at lower temperatures in Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 comp… Show more

“…. We note that the single ion vibronic (or Jahn-Teller) coupling can lead to intersite quadrupole interactions, which could also play a role in defining the low-temperature state of Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 and in explaining the fast thermal variation of the (C 11 − C 12 )/2 elastic constant [33,34,49], still not undestood up to now. Work on this subject is currently under way.…”

“…Of particular significance for the understanding of the spin liquid ground state are the numerous experimental evidences of either a dynamic symmetry lowering, by low temperature x-ray diffraction [27], optical measurements [28], and inelastic neutron scattering [29], or of a strong spinphonon coupling: the giant magnetostriction [7,30], the lowtemperature divergence of the bulk modulus [31,32] and of the elastic constants [33,34]. Very recent high-resolution neutron scattering experiments [35,36] have revealed the presence of nonstandard hybridization between an acoustic phonon branch and the first CEF transition, above an energy around 1.5 meV, but with a vanishing low-energy branch.…”

“…In fact, magnetoelastic interactions in Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 have been manifested for as long as the material has been studied. Studies of the Young's modulus [66,67] and elastic constants [68] show that they soften anomalously at low temperature, suggesting a CJTE at 0.1 K, below the temperature range of the study. Later, a systematic search for a distortion using xray diffraction down to 0.3 K was made, and although various Bragg peaks were observed to broaden as if approaching a cubic to tetragonal distortion, no distortion actually occurred [60].…”
