Abstract:We derive the compliance of an elastic cylinder submitted to a line Hertzian contact. The cylinder is maintained in static equilibrium by bulk forces that are proportional to rigid body motions. Displacements are measured by setting integral gauges that amount to prescribing zero net linear and angular momentum, if the problem were to depend upon time. Various cases are covered, representing either infinitesimal or finite contact displacements, including partial slip. The developments are illustrated by revisi… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
