Electric circuit interactive laboratory

Abstract: Ensuring the best teaching quality and promoting the critical thinking and hands-on experience of students are main concerns in the continuous development plan of the laboratories in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the American University of Beirut. To this end, laboratory course materials are not only subject to constant updates, but also innovative teaching methods and evaluation techniques are developed. This paper outlines a new teaching methodology and novel academic Moodle-based eva… Show more

“…With the increasing interest in online education, more web-based applications like U=RIsolve started to be developed, as they bring many advantages to undergraduate students, who have real-time access to problems and solutions, which dramatically improves distance learning. Several studies have produced webbased applications to promote success in electrical circuit analysis, providing students with online courses [38], remote homework systems [3], and virtual laboratories for circuit simulation [61,25,34]. One example is the application described in Reference [20], where authors designed an interactive textbook of examples (continuous-time linear circuits) that are submitted by administrators (tutors) along with analysis details such as circuit image, netlist, problem statement, and component values.…”

“…Thus, laboratory courses are updated continuously, and innovative teaching methods are developed to improve the student's skills. 39 Further, an educational method in laboratories that combines theoretical, simulation and experimental approaches can reach a higher-level knowledge 40 but it requires a complicated design process for updating the complete courses, and it has to be connected with different classes to cover complex topics such as smart grids. When a complex class, SG laboratory, is designed, sometimes more than one course is included in the main course, 41 so the laboratory course can connect several engineering topics from the basic ones to the complex ones.…”

“…This type of education has certain advantages, but its implementation requires both the creation of laboratory workshops executed remotely and also the specialized software. Interactive laboratories are widely used at the universities of many countries, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] and various international scientific projects are devoted to their design. 5 The application of remote laboratories in the educational process made it possible to solve problems inherent in laboratory installations, and by means of virtual laboratories the problem of an almost simultaneous access to the "experimental" equipment for many students can be solved.…”

“…8 The authors of the majority of published works generally pay attention to creating the laboratory works using computer modeling of various processes and their remote performance by means of modern Internet technologies. It allows to create laboratory works, laboratory stands with remote access 7 and to provide scientific research using complex equipment. Therefore, some works are devoted to the creation of virtual scientific laboratories and application of various modern cloud computing.…”
