Electric-Field-Induced Piezoelectricity of Some Pure and Doped Alkali Halides

Abstract: We show that the measurement of electric-field-induced piezoelectricity is a sensitive method to determine third-order derivatives of the thermodynamic potential functions with respect to electric field and mechanical stress in pure and doped alkali halide crystals. The method is equivalent to a determination of the stress derivatives of the dielectric constant and to a measurement of quadratic electrostriction.
