Electric fields and electrical insulation

Abstract: The adoption of a field-theoretical approach to problems arising in the framework of electrical insulation is discussed with reference to six main topics, which have been addressed over the last 30 years. These include uniform field electrodes, Green's differential equation, electrode surface roughness, induced charge, electrostatic probes, and partial discharge transients, together with several follow-on aspects. Each topic is introduced and thereafter the progress achieved through the use of a field-theoreti… Show more

“…The input transfer function of the measurement system, and therefore the resolution are greatly affected by shape and position of the electrostatic voltmeter [13]. Effects on resolution in the overall measurement systems per each parameter are evaluated using an electrostatic voltmeter model with the structure in Fig.…”

“…Methods based on field theoretical approach were reviewed in [3], which indicated its advantages in the analysis of electrical insulation problems. However, the electric field evaluation of a practical insulator is so complex that an analytical method is very difficult, if not possible, to compute the exact solutions.…”

“…where is the macroscopic field at the electrode surface, p is the pressure, crit = 88.4 kV/(mm MPa) is the critical field strength of SF 6 [31], and ∆ is the minimal distance between ring electrode and PTFE sample. Practically, to save simulation time, the macroscopic field E with semi-ellipsoid shapes is calculated once in a separate run and the ratio of the field from this full simulation to the field with only a smooth half ring is derived.…”
