Over the past 50 years or so, the authors have written and reviewed many papers dealing with Mossbauer spectral research and have noticed many pitfalls, omissions, and marginal to poor practices in the literature. This paper first describes the best recommended practices and protocols for measuring, analyzing, and presenting Mossbauer spectra for publication. To illustrate these recommendations, the paper next presents a discussion of the techniques that ensure the best possible Mossbauer-effect spectrometer calibration, the best methods for minimizing the spectral line widths and thus obtaining the best possible spectral resolution, and the best spectral velocity ranges to use. A variety of iron containing compounds chosen from the fields of inorganic, organic, and material chemistry are used to illustrate the best practices and protocols that should be used. These materials include an organoiron carbonyl complex, iron phosphate compounds, two single molecule magnet compounds, and iron spin-state crossover complexes.

The spin-orbit induced electric field gradient at the nuclear site of 183 Os and 183 Re impurities in Fe and of 191 Pt and 186 Ir impurities in Ni was determined for ͓100͔, ͓110͔, and ͓111͔ orientations of the magnetization. The measurements were performed on single-crystal samples using nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei and modulated adiabatic fast passage on oriented nuclei. In the Ni experiments the electric field gradient was also determined for other orientations of the magnetization in the ͑110͒ plane. These data, together with previous results on the 5d impurities, provide the first fairly complete data set on the spin-orbit induced electric field gradient in cubic Fe, Co, and Ni. Our results establish in particular that the effect depends in general considerably on the direction of the magnetization. We summarize the present knowledge of these electric field gradients, their magnitude, their systematics, and the form and magnitude of their dependence on the direction of the magnetization. The properties of the effect are explained within the tight-binding model in terms of the spin-orbit induced deformation of the electron distribution. We also present and discuss data on the dependence of the hyperfine field on the direction of the magnetization, which was found to be smaller than 10 Ϫ3 , and on the inhomogeneous broadening of the electric field gradient.

Mössbauer transmission spectra for the 14.41-keV resonant line in 57 Fe have been collected at room temperature by using 57 Co(Rh) commercial source and α-Fe strain-free single crystal as an absorber. The absorber was magnetized to saturation in the absorber plane perpendicular to the γ-ray beam axis applying small external magnetic field. Spectra were collected for various orientations of the magnetizing field, the latter lying close to the [110] crystal plane. A positive electric quadrupole coupling constant was found practically independent on the field orientation. One obtains the following value for the (average) principal component of the electric field gradient (EFG) tensor under assumption that the EFG tensor is axially symmetric and the principal axis is aligned with the magnetic hyperfine field acting on the 57 Fe nucleus. The nuclear spectroscopic electric quadrupole moment for the first excited state of the 57 Fe nucleus was adopted as +0.17 b. Similar measurement was performed at room temperature using as-rolled polycrystalline α-Fe foil of high purity in the zero external field. Corresponding value for the principal component of the EFG was found as . Hence, it seems that the origin of the EFG is primarily due to the local (atomic) electronic wave function distortion caused by the spin-orbit interaction between effective electronic spin S and incompletely quenched electronic angular momentum L . It seems as well that the lowest order term proportional to the product S λ L • • dominates, as no direction dependence of the EFG principal component is seen. The lowest order term is isotropic for a cubic symmetry as one has 1 λ λ = for cubic systems with the symbol 1 denoting unit operator and λ being the coupling parameter.2
