This paper describes the effect of heat treatment on the optical properties of plasma-polymerized vinylene carbonate (PPVC) thin films deposited on to glass substrates by low-pressure glow discharge plasma. Surface morphology and chemical structure of heat-treated PPVC were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. The surfaces of the PPVC thin films are observed to be smooth and pinhole free, and no significant change is observed due to heat treatment up to 573 K. The structural analyses of PPVC indicate that structural rearrangements may be due to the breaking of bonds, and this process enhances due to heat treatment. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic studies have been carried out on the as-grown and heat-treated PPVC thin films of different thicknesses. It is seen that the absorbance increases with the increase in the thickness and heat treatment temperature. The direct band gap energies were found to be in the range of 3.96-4.15 eV for as deposited, and those were in the range of 3.15-4.00 eV for the PPVC thin films heat treated at 473 and 573 K. The band gap of the PPVC thin film decreases gradually with increasing heat treatment temperature. C 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. a b s t r a c tPlasma polymerization is found to be an excellent technique for the preparation of good quality, pinhole-free, polymer thin films from different monomer precursors. The present work describes the preparation and characterization of polypyrrole (PPy) thin films by ac plasma polymerization technique in their pristine and in situ iodine doped forms. The electrical conductivity studies of the aluminiumpolymer-aluminium (Al-polymer-Al) structures have been carried out and a space charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism is identified as the most probable mechanism of carrier transport in these polymer films. The electrical conductivity shows an enhanced value in the iodine doped sample. The reduction of optical band gap by iodine doping is correlated with the observed conductivity results.

Thin films of different thicknesses were prepared through glow discharge of 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) using a capacitively coupled reactor. Current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics for plasma polymerized (PP) DEAEMA thin films of thicknesses 100, 200, 250, and 300 nm in aluminum/PPDEAEMA/aluminum sandwich configuration were studied over the temperature range from 298 to 423 K. J-V curves reveal that in the lowvoltage region, the conduction current obeys Ohm's law while in the high-voltage region the behavior attributed to be space charge-limited conduction in PPDEAEMA thin films. The carrier mobility was calculated to be about 6.80 3 10 219 to 2.38 3 10 218 m 22 V 21 s 21 for various thicknesses. The free carrier density was found to be about 1.78 3 10 23 to 2.04 3 10 23 m 23 , and the trap density was found to be about 6.93 3 10 23 to 15.9 3 10 23 m 23 for different thicknesses. The activation energies were estimated to be about 0.005-0.016 eV for 2 and 30 V of PPDEAEMA thin films of different thicknesses. The lowactivation energies indicate that the thermally activated hopping conduction is operative in PPDEAEMA thin films.
