Electrical discharge machining studies on reactive sintered FeAl

Abstract: Electrical discharge machining (EDM) studies on reactive sintered FeAl were carried out with different process parameters. The metal removal rate and tool removal rate were found to increase with the applied pulse on-time. The surface roughness of machined surface also changed with the applied pulse on-time. XRD analysis of machined surface of sintered FeAl showed the formation of Fe 3 C phase during the EDM process. The debris analysis was used to identify the material removal mechanism occurring during the E… Show more

“…Presence of a black layer is found on the tool surface after the machining, which is visible by naked eye. The black layer is nothing but a carbon layer, which is formed due to break down of dielectric during the EDM [9,10]. A similar type of layer is also found on workpiece surface.…”

“…Investigations on the formation of cracks in EDMed sample indicate that the depth of the surface cracks increases with increasing discharge energy. 26 Owing to the pressure of carbon of the dielectric fluid, which becomes part of molten metal, the surface chemistry becomes different than the parent material. When the stress in the surface exceeds the material's ultimate tensile strength, cracks are formed.…”

“…Material with high hardness and high strength such as super alloys, composites, advanced ceramics etc with close precision and surface finish can be done by EDM satisfactorily, where the traditional machining fails (Petrofes 1988;Gadalla et al 1991;Ho and Newman 2003;Khanra and Khanta 2005;Khanra et al 2006). In EDM, the tool and the workpiece (WP) are connected to two electrodes and separated by a dielectric fluid.…”
