Electrical measurements of a multi-mode hybrid pixel detector ASIC for radiation detection

Abstract: We present the first electrical measurements of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to be used in a hybrid pixel detector intended for dosimetry and radiation detection. The dosimeter has three programmable modes of operation: photon counting mode, energy integration mode, and dosimetry mode. The ASIC comprises a matrix of 16 by 16 (256 total) square pixels of 220 µm pitch, providing 12.4 mm 2 of segmented active area. Each pixel can be configured to operate in one of the three radiation measurem… Show more

“…Digital circuitry for in-pixel processing becomes a more prominent part in the pixel in terms of area and transistor count. This trend is also visible in pixel readout chips developed as a spin-off for other applications [65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73] like photon counting: TABLE II. lists several readout chips, the ones intended for high energy physics (white background) all use enclosed layout except ClicPix_demo [77] where the 65 nm technology provides sufficient radiation tolerance without it, the one for other applications (gray background) do not use enclosed layout except Eiger [72] [73].…”

“…The Dosepix-detector [22] is a hybrid photon-counting pixel detector with a 16 × 16 pixel matrix. The pixel pitch is 220 µm, resulting in an active area of about 3.5 × 3.5 mm 2 .…”

“…The basic concept was to design a chip composed of a matrix of pixels each containing a multi-channel analyser circuit. The Dosepix chip contains a matrix of 16 × 16 pixels at a pitch of 220 μm [40,41]. Many details of the circuit can be found in [42].…”
