Electrical picosecond measurements of the photoresponse in YBa2Cu3O7−x

Abstract: Ultrafast transient voltage pulses (rise time 12 ps, width 29 ps) have been observed at 50 K across a current-biased very thin YBa2Cu3O7−x epitaxial film (thickness 30 nm) when illuminated by short laser pulses. The accuracy of the present measures shows the system reaction during the first tens of picoseconds. Such very narrow photosignals can be described as related to nonequilibrium phenomena. The measured decay times corroborate the biexponential escape of the deposited energy described by other authors.

“…3 The commonly observed poor chemical stability of very thin YBCO film ͑Ͻ30 nm͒ makes the device patterning extremely difficult to achieve and to make reliable. Peroz a͒ and J. C. “…This material features a short electron-phonon scattering time constant and a convenient critical temperature (T c ≈ 11 K 4 K). It has also been found that characteristic times of high-T c cuprate superconductors (HTS) such as YBaCuO are even shorter than in NbN, making HTS-HEB operating at or above liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) attractive for future fast photon detectors [35,36]. Figure 1 shows the structure of HEB SSPD.…”

“…5 However, a response with fast recovery time is required for broadband detectors, microwave generation, laser-microwave intermixing, and other applications for electronic devices. 8,10,11 Tl-based HTS devices, on the other hand, may be more attractive than the YBCO devices because of their higher T c s. This is a systematic study on obtaining a picosecond transient from an optically thick Tl 2 Ba 2 CaCu 2 O 8 or Tl 0.5 Pb 0.5 Sr 2 ͑Ca 0.8 Y 0.2 ͒Cu 2 O 7 film triggered by ϳmJ/cm 2 laser pulse. 12,13 The electrical measurements of the response times of 16 -40 ps have been reported on YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7Ϫ‫ץ‬ ͑YBCO͒ thin films triggered by ϳJ/cm 2 laser pulses.…”
