Electrical strength of air containing ozone and nitric oxides produced by intensive partial discharges

Abstract: Internal arcing ter. results of gapped Sic arresters are presented. During a .-st in which the arrester is exposed to internal arcing, the positive impulse breakdown voltage increases. Measurements made with a model arrangement indicate that the increase in the electrical strength of gas is higher for positive than for negative impulse polarity. When the internal discharges extinguish, recovery processes occur. Additional phenomena that can cause changes in the electrical strength are discussed.

“…Therefore in the initially dry arrester interior the production of moisture is possible [11]. This was confirmed by Chrzan [7] and Izumi [12] during varistor ageing by partial discharges. In their experiments small liquid droplets were found.…”

“…Therefore, it can concentrate at the bottom of the arrester and cause degradation of the varistors and the sealing. Ozone is an electronegative gas, therefore the electrical strength of air containing this gas and other by-products of partial discharges is higher than that of pure air [7]. When partial discharges cease the electrical strength of the gas mixture decreases.…”
