Electricity generation and brewery wastewater treatment from sequential anode-cathode microbial fuel cell

Abstract: Abstract:A sequential anode-cathode double-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC), in which the effluent of anode chamber was used as a continuous feed for an aerated cathode chamber, was constructed in this experiment to investigate the performance of brewery wastewater treatment in conjugation with electricity generation. Carbon fiber was used as anode and plain carbon felt with biofilm as cathode. When hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 14. at an external resistance of 300 Ω. To estimate the electrochemical perf… Show more

“…Thus, it is necessary to investigate the decolorization performance of azo dyes using biocathode BES. Furthermore, there are some studies on combination of anode and cathode in BES for wastewater or groundwater treatment (Li et al, 2010;Lohner et al, 2011;Sun et al, 2011a;Wen et al, 2010). Considering the bioanode decolorization at present, aircathode single chamber MFC has been used extensively (Cao et al, 2010;Hou et al, 2011bHou et al, , 2012Xu et al, 2013).…”

“…Fuel compounds are also regarded as a major determinant of MFC performance. Pure compounds such as glucose, acetic acid, and lactic acid have been used successfully, while mixed substrates such as brewery waste water [10,11], swine wastewater [12], distillery wastewater [13], and landfill leachate [14] have been used to demonstrate MFC as a novel technology that couples renewable energy production with wastewater treatment.…”

“…Marsili-libelli et al [9] have used the least squares technique to estimate oxygen transfer coefficient and OUR in real time according to the dynamic characteristics of the air flow and dissolved oxygen. Controlling DOC in the processes of wastewater treatment is, however, still an operational challenge [10]. A key question for this is what the primary factors that influence the DOC are.…”
