Electroanalytical Method for Determining Pyrogallol in Biodiesel in the Presence of a Surfactant

Abstract: Asensitive,s traightforward electroanalytical method for determining pyrogallol (PY) in biodiesel in the presence of as urfactant was developed using av oltammetric technique and screen-printed electrodes.T he influence of surfactant addition (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Triton X-100 (TX-100), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI), tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB), or tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB)) on the supporting electrolyte (0.04 mol L À1 BrittonÀRobinson buffer) wa… Show more

“…When the surfactant reaches its critical micelle concentration (CMC, 0.65 mmol L −1 ), the surfactant molecules remain in aggregates of bound micelles by hydrophobic interactions . The presence of surfactant micelles leads to the formation of a surfactant bilayer on the surface of the electrode that is capable of interfering with the electron transfer, reducing the increase in current . Thus, a concentration of 0.6 mmol L −1 was chosen for future experiments.…”

“…This enhancement on analytical signal can be attributed to the surfactant capacity to adsorb on a rough surface, such as carbon‐based electrodes, via hydrophobic interactions to generate a surfactant‐adsorbed layer 44. The higher peak currents observed should result from a better adsorption and electrostatic interactions between MBC and this surfactant‐adsorbed layer, which leads to an increase on MBC available at electrode surface trough the SDS adsorbed layer.…”

“…2,[4][5][6][7] Therefore, the monitoring of this antioxidant in biodiesel can bring information related to the oxidation stability of biodiesels. 8 Electrochemical methods have been reported to the determination of pyrogallol (PY), including enzyme electrodes system, 9 screen-printed graphite electrodes, 10,11 modified carbon paste electrodes, 12,13 and polyaminoanthraquinone film-modified platinum wire, 14 which were applied to different matrices. Only one of these works was devoted to the analysis of biodiesel.…”

“…Only one of these works was devoted to the analysis of biodiesel. 10 The main drawback of the analysis of biodiesel by electrochemical methods is related to the low dielectric constant of this matrix, adsorption effects on the electrode surface and incompatibility with screen-printed electrodes. [15][16][17] Because of this difficulty, sample dilution in hydroethanolic electrolyte is often necessary to the analysis of biodiesel.…”
