Electrocardiography of the normal domestic pet rabbit

Abstract: To establish a well-tolerated technique for recording electrocardiograms (ECGs) and a reference range for the normal pet rabbit ECG, 46 healthy pet rabbits were studied. The following reference ranges were calculated. Heart rate was 198 to 330 bpm. P waves had a duration of 0.01 to 0.05 seconds and an amplitude of 0.04 to 0.12 mV. The P-R interval was 0.04 to 0.08 seconds and the duration of the QRS complex was 0.02 to 0.06 seconds. The amplitude of the R wave was 0.03 to 0.39 mV. The Q-T interval was 0.08 to … Show more

“…In the frontal plane of these pacas it was between 26° and 41° corresponding to the values reported by Szabuniewicz et al (1971Szabuniewicz et al ( , 1978 and Dudás--Györki et al (2011) in rabbits, capybaras and ferrets; however was different from reports in Brazilian agouti (Diniz et al 2013). These variations can be explained by thoracic conformations differences between animals as described by Lord et al (2010) and Tilley (1992).…”

“…T wave amplitude values for other animal species of the same size as non-anesthetized rabbits were about 50% lower than those found in this experiment. In contrast, non-anesthetized ferrets presented a value close to that of anesthetize agoutis [9,26]. This relationship is well studied in dogs and cats and it is considered that the T wave can measure up to 25% of the R wave in these species.…”

“…During exercise or stress, the QT interval decreases due to the natural production of catecholamines, justifying the differences in these values found for anesthetized and non-anesthetized agoutis [45]. In humans, this time is lower than several animal species such as dogs [47], rabbits [26] and non-anesthetized agoutis [7], being an indication of need of early repolarization for animals. This interval was shown to be smaller than for humans.…”

“…Nowadays, knowledge about the incidence, diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases in pet rabbits is lacking, although cardiomyopathy is a frequent finding in older or laboratory rabbits (Pariaut, 2009;Lennox, 2010;Lord et al, 2010). In cardiac diseases, electrocardiography is an essential technique to determine heart status.…”

“…Owing to the fact that rabbits have a thin skin, toothless alligator clips should be used (Turner Giannico et al, 2015) or with the teeth bent outwards (Lord et al, 2010).…”
