Electrocatalytic Materials of NiCoRe Electrodeposited Alloy for Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Abstract: The electrochemical behavior of electrodeposited Ni-Co-Re triple alloy is investigated in an alkaline medium and the kinetic parameters for the hydrogen evolution reaction are determined. The results are compared with those for electrodeposited Ni and Ni-Co alloy. The hydrogen evolution reaction occurs at a lower overpotential in the case of the triple alloy, which appears thereby as a promising electrocatalytic material for a negative electrode in an alkaline water electrolysis.

“…Ni-based alloys mixed with Zn, P, Mo, V, W, and Fe are reported as a way of developing Ni electrodes used for hydrogen and oxygen reactions. 172 These materials have lower overpotential concerning the HER compared with Ni electrodes, related to the higher active surface area. However, nickel alloys must be used with caution, as easy oxidation to Ni 2+ can proceed.…”

“…The hydrogen overvoltage on both electrodes is much lower than the value of the overvoltage on a pure Ni electrode. A Ni alloy with a low content of Re (Ni/Re57-Co37) exhibits better elec-tro-catalytic properties [102]. Binary nickelsilver alloys of different composition having a higher activity than the pure nickel in the hydrogen evolution process were synthesized.…”

“…The practical significance of research in this area is associated mainly with the growth in the production of rhenium and, consequently, with the need to address the issue of the optimal technology for the separation of rhenium from solutions in the form of pure metal or alloys. In addition, it is required to find the possibilities of using rhenium and its alloys as galvanic coatings for various purposes [16][17][18].…”
