Electrochemical activation of CO2in ionic liquid (BMIMBF4): synthesis of organic carbonates under mild conditions

Abstract: A new electrochemical procedure for electrosynthesis of organic carbonates from CO 2 and alcohols has been established in CO 2 -saturated room temperature ionic liquid BMIMBF 4 solution, followed by addition of an alkylating agent. The synthesis was carried out under mild (P CO 2 =1.0 atm, T = 55 uC) and safe conditions. The use of volatile and toxic solvents and catalysts as well as of any additional supporting electrolytes has been avoided. The influence of temperature, cathode material, working potential, a… Show more

“…Imidazolium-based salts, composed merely of ions, are a kind of novel medium for many chemical processes. In recent years, increasing attempts have been made to use imidazolium-based salts as the solvents, electrolytes and catalysts for CO 2 electroreduction [8][9][10][11][12]. In the salt 1-butyl-3-methyimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF 4 ), CO 2 was reduced on Ag electrode at À2.0 V (vs. Ag wire) at 50 C [13].…”

“…We also believe that this material can combine with other materials, such as polymers, [65][66][67][68] with an aim to broaden the applications in the fields such as energy storage, 69 sensing and EMI shielding. [70][71][72][73][74][75] …”

“…During our studies on CO 2 fixation for the production of value-added chemicals [14][15][16], CO 2 was first electro-activated with alcohols to synthesize dialkyl carbonates [15] in CO 2 -saturated RTILs. Prompted by these applications of NHC-CO 2 in organic synthesis and our continuous research on CO 2 fixation in RTILs, NHC-CO 2 was used in this study to synthesize dialkyl carbonates from CO 2 and alcohols under mild conditions.…”
